View each morning as a new beginning

I think of my sons when they were very young looking at this picture. They loved to play on the swing-set we had in the backyard; such great memories. Every day was a new adventure for them. It still is, right?

As I’m writing this, today is also September 11. It’s a day we each have specific memories of what we were doing. All of our lives changed since.

I was away from home, from the family, on a business trip in Chicago for 11 days. (My role was a product manager, was a key speaker and presenter at a huge industry Expo event.) There was chaos everywhere and it took 4 days to get home because no flights were allowed and all the rental cars were gone.

Without getting into details, the CEO of the company we worked for showed what was important to him….and it wasn’t the employees. Not a good leadership example.

Our sons were 3 and 6 years old at the time. It had been 15 days since the family was together. Lots of hugging when I got back and they were glad to see mom. I’m also forever grateful for my husband’s support and being there for our sons.

About a month later, I hung up my “business suit”, became an independent contractor, and have focused on more important things since. That change wasn’t easy at first, but I believed it would be okay in the long run.

If you believe on a deeper level that somehow, no matter the outcome, that you will be “okay” — this can change your entire experience of living. (This is a discipline I embrace on a regular basis.)

Tomorrow owes us nothing. Wake up each morning and be grateful for what you have.

Gratitude is a word that is used a lot these days because this word holds a lot of power. Gratitude changes your attitude.

And every morning is a new beginning.

Would love to hear what you’re grateful for … or share your September 11 memory.
